Open a GSI file and write it back

4 Nov 2026 · Field files

Read GSI8 or GSI16 as a grid, change a value, and export GSI or Excel.

The GSI editor shows a Leica GSI file as a grid of word-index columns (WI 11 to 88), instead of the fixed-width text the instrument writes.

Open

  1. In the sidebar, expand Tools and click GSI Editor.
  2. Click Open and select one or more .gsi files.
  3. The editor detects GSI8 (15 characters per word) or GSI16 (23 characters per word) from the word length. Check Options, under GSI Format, if you want to see which one it chose.

Station-setup rows are light blue. A set-of-angles result row is light grey. A cell that fails the check is red: an angle outside 0–400 gon, a negative distance, or a point name that is too long.

Opening another file adds its records to the grid that is already there.

Change a value and export

  1. Edit the cell.
  2. Click Export.
  3. Choose GSI8, GSI16, XLSX or CSV. The file extension follows the format.

Exporting a GSI8 file as GSI16 rewrites the records with 16-character data words. Exporting as XLSX is the same button with XLSX selected.

A CSV or Excel file can come back in through the column-mapping wizard: open the editor, import, map the columns, and export a .gsi when the grid is what you want the instrument, or Station Adjustment, to read.
